Experience

I love being a tutor because I am passionate about the subjects that I offer, and I want to spread that passion. I also believe that one on one teaching is a great way to help a student thrive, especially since it allows you to get a feel for their learning style. I love helping people succeed and become more confident in areas where they struggle. Previous tutoring experience has been confined to tutoring friends, family members, and classmates for free, as well as helping children (some of whom had ADHD) with their reading skills. I spent one summer working at a reading camp. I graduated high school as an AP student with honors, and got 4s or 5s on English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Spanish Literature and Culture, Psychology, and AP U.S. History. I got an ACT score of 26, but my scores on Reading and English were significantly higher, both in the 30s. In university, I have taken several History classes due to my major, many of them involving the history of the United States. I am confident that I can teach U.S. History from the pre-history of North America to the present. In 2013, I won a Gold Key in Fiction and an Honorable Mention in Poetry for the Western Regional Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. In 2016, I won first place in the Thompson Western Writing Awards in CU Boulder. I have a great deal of personal and professional experience with people with disabilities (particularly neurological differences such as ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders), and I would be thrilled to tutor people with disabilities who may need a different teaching style. I find that schools can often be difficult places for students with learning differences to flourish, and I would really like to try different approaches to allow people to grow and learn even in a world that is not built to accommodate them.

Hobbies

I enjoy studying and taking in popular culture, especially film and television. I particularly like the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it comes to films (I like any superhero media, really, as well as the action genre in general), and really any kind of television (especially action-based TV or sitcoms). I write fiction and poetry, and one day I would like to write for television. When it comes to social issues, I am very passionate about disability advocacy and all its intersections. I am also Peruvian-American, and have been to Peru many times, as most of my family is there.
